PSBC Falls Short In 2009 National Title Run

Picture
Though overcoming many adversities during the season, the PSBC fell short in a disappointing World Series run. In its first game of the series, PSBC showed its strengths by defeating the University of llinois 7-0 with strong pitching from David Hine and solid offense and defense. In its second game of the series, the PSBC hung around with Sam Houston St. through 5 innings before the game was called 2-2 due to severe rain. Picking up the game from the top of the 6th the following day, the PSBC fell behind quickly 5-2 before it surrendered a 5-3 loss to the Bearkats through 9 innings. Following the conclusion of the 2nd game, the PSBC played the University of Arizona. Within the first 3 innings, the Wildcats built a 6-0 lead on walks, errors, and timely hits. Battling back the whole game with strong pitching from John Garcyzinzki, the Nittany Lions came back to be down 4-6 in the 8th. However a grand slam in the bottom of the 8th would propel the Wildcats to 10-4 lead and the Nittany Lions would succumb to the U of A with a 10-5 loss.

One of the greatest PSBC players ever, Nicholas Powden put up impressive numbers his senior year to be voted MVP by his peers. Nick batted in the 3rd and 4th spot for most of the year and provided impeccable defense as well as a strong bat. Hitting for power and average, Nick belted 4 HRs, collected 31 RBI, and batted .385 along the way. Nick's bat, defense, and lead by example attitude will be sorely missed next year.

Hands down the greatest pitching talent to ever wear a PSBC uniform, David capped off his senior campaign with a Cy Young award. Coming back on short notice without any spring training, Dave came into his own during the season and found his true form at the World Series pitching a 7 inning 2 hit shutout against the University of Illinois. When in true form, Dave's pitching was dominant due to superb command, overpowering stuff, and swagger.

Although the team fell short of its goal, Dan had an impeccable season leading the team in batting average while batting in the 4th and 5th position for the year. Dan plans on coming back next year for the PSBC as a grad student.
